Whether an official merger takes place or not, the two companies are working together and at a level not seen since Carlos Ghosn took over leadership of Nissan in 1999, maintaining his role as CEO for Renault too. Marchionne has said, "he is no Carlos Ghosn," preferring to run one unified company instead of two separate operations.
What the combined automaker would be called and what brands would survive are matters of interest and speculation. Jokingly, Italian-American Motors seems appropriate. On a serious matter, the Chrysler brand is weak and could be scuttled as could Lancia or Alfa Romeo on the Fiat side of the house.
